The SDSI Spring 2018 workshop explored data science for the advancement of society and business. Researchers in both industry and academia are working at the forefront of our most challenging problems with a focused interest in how this work can advance society while concurrently achieving business goals. There are many areas where these two goals are not mutually exclusive, and often, it is the application of modern data science tools and techniques that are driving the future of impact-based research. This workshop explored a set of four themes where both academic and industry researchers are working to solve real world problems while also improving and developing new methods.

| 11:00 am | Session 2: Personal sensing and autonomy Moderated by Carlos Bustamante, Professor of Biomedical Data Science and Genetics Operations Data from sensors have become a ubiquitous part of life in wearable devices, automobiles, home appliances, and more. Researchers are now able to use this data to address challenges around personal health and wellbeing, and how we interact with our surroundings. This session explored how researchers are using these data streams to better understand personal and community dynamics.
